HI All

We have some products that we apply kapton tape to the goldfingers prior to the SMT process. This is currently done manually. It is labor intensive and I am looking for an automated method to apply tape to the gold fingers.

If anyone has any information on how this could be done I would appreciate it. thanks

Thoughts are: * Eliminate solder spotting on gold fingers through process improvement in broard handling, printing paste control, and reflow recipe development. Search the fine SMTnet Archives for previous discussions. * Dispense or print a reflow temperature capable temporary solder mask that is either water washable or peelable, depending on your process. * Have your board fabricator print a reflow temperature capable temporary solder mask that either water washable or peelable, depending on your process. * Use a removable cover over the fingers, such as fiberglass gold finger glove [Stevens Products; 128 N Park St, East Orange, NJ, 07019; 973-672-2140 F 973-672-2837 http://www.stevensproducts.com; Ross Stevens, Jr.] or board shunts that are hi-temp rubber strips with grooves [pn 5820-byb & 5812-byb] [JC Supply; 10130 Talley Ln, Houston TX,77041; 800-660-8891]

Unless you go custom, the only automation I've seen for tape is the automatic dispensers. They work very well and do reduce time needed to perform this process. Could help until you revamp your process like Davef has posted.

I remember way back when we had a finger taping machine. I cannot remember who, what, or where, but I would bet that they are still available.

Basically just ran board thru machine and both sides or one side would be taped. It was not conveyorized.

May want to do a google search or something

Well Gary I just did a long search as well and I can find nothing either. Maybe I ate too much rosin in those days?

Good luck

When you do a google search, put quotes around your terms to only come up with pages that have exactly the terms you are looking for. For instance, my Google search came up with: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22goldfinger+masking%22 which then led me to: http://listserv.ipc.org/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0406&L=technet&D=0&H=1&T=0&P=13685

I hope this helps~
