Low tensile strenght of SMD

Low tensile strenght of SMD | 18 July, 2006

Hello all,

After lead-free reflow process of single side assembled PCB I have a problem with a tensile strenght of SMT transformers - I can rip the parts from the board very easily.

There is very good component leads wetting (optical inspection) and pads solderability. The leads of component are made of CuSn6 and tinned galvanically with Sn100.

May anybody help me?

Regards Rosen

Are the leads actually pulling off the pads or are the pads coming up as well? Did you ever try this "experiment" before you used lead-free?

Can you describe "easy"? Is it a flick of the finger, do you need tweezers? Remember, the solder is just there to provide an electrical connection, the physical attachment is a bonus!

What do the leads of the components look like when you pull them off? Are they covered in solder? Did the plating stay on the solder fillets attached to the pads?

Dear Steve,

I think the plating o fthe leads stay on the solder fillets. The leads of component are free of solder.

Sounds like a part problem. You must use the same broker we do. New parts with bend leads, leaded parts "redipped" to turn lead free. The list goes on....

This RoHS has created a new "underworld" of brokered parts --- parts dipped in Lead-Free alloy to pass as "lead free."

I could see some guy with a fur coat and feathered boa hawking lead free parts on the street: "Check it ouuuttt...I got lead free transformers, capacitors, and resistors, and I'll sell dem for fitty cent."
