we here are setting up our lead free process. Was curious about how others handle these issues. 1) Do you physicaly segregate leaded from non-leaded (different storage areas, shelving) for part storage? 2)Do you have a seperate board washer just for lead free? 3)What has been the most popular plating used for your pcb's? 4)We were considering using a different color solder mask to designate lead free pcb assy. Have others done this, is it a good idea? Any input would be appreciated.

we have used blue and red color solder mask on a trial basis for our LF assemblies. We are performing expts using Imm Sn and Imm Ag to determine the best surface finish.

Also, we pass the LF baords thru the same inline wash as you dont wash away the solder (you wash away the flux).

We have a segregated hand soldering stn with dedicated tools. training has been provided to our associaed on leaf free soldering.

How did you sort through the concern that leaded solder balls [running around in the wash tank from a previous wash process] might be washed onto and become lodged on a lead-free assembly?

Did you verify that the new colour of soldermask was RoHS compliant before you switched? I've heard that many aren't, and that switching colours can sometimes mean moving from one that was compliant to one that is not.

We internally decided not to change PN's (an agonizing decision with pros and cons). We have mixed Part Types in our bins. RoHS(leadfree) part reels and packaging are marked with a coloured sticker when they are received. We use FIFO on our stock, but we have modified it that lead stock must be used first even if received after leadfree stock, to try to use up lead stock, and then use FIFO, and we are telling purchasing to only order leadfree whenever possible.

I have been wondering about the inline wash too. We have a sister company that we share a wash with and I asked them there thoughts and they didn't seem concerned. I thought there was a little lead in the flux also there is smt tools(squegees, scrapers,miss printed boards etc.. that get ran thru the wash. I was thinking there should be a seperate wash for lead free. BUT I guess that depends on how much water gets recycled and how good the filters are.

I am not intimately familiar with every resource available in our stores, but I don't believe we currently use or own any dessicant storage cabinets. MSD's, LF or not, are stored in sealed Moisture Barrier Bags with dessicant.
