To those of you that use Universal 4796 HSPs: What is the typical % of pick errors resulting in scrap off of your machines? What have you done to reduce these problems? Thank you for any feedback.

We are usually running <0.5% depending on run size/qty. The biggest issue for us is usually feeder picks at start-up as well as feeder jamming issues or cover tape pulling issues. We are low volume so a bad start-up with respect to feeder picks is very noticable %-wise. UIC makes a jig to "0,0" your feeders - you might look into that to get the rates down. Also, look at management data and adjust "component verticle" values if you are getting high rates of rejection specific to C.V. Proper adjustment of histograms on your cameras can also greatly affect accept/reject rates. Feeder condition/maintenance is also important. An operator that is good at manually assigning feeder offsets to get quicker start-up picks will help you a great deal as well. Other than that, once the machine finds the center of a part, it's a tough machine to beat!

Thanks for your response PWH. These are the exact same issues we have been having. I did call UIC about that feeder jig. It cost about 12k USD. Do you guys use it? Is it worth the money?

I have not used one of these jigs. We just make sure and reset feeder B offsets before every build. We've also got good at guessing where a missed pick-up is just by looking at the position of the tape pocket in relation to adjacent feeders and changing feeder B offsets accordingly. You might look into rental options with UIC or a broker to save $ on this jig. We have thought of doing this rental program as a periodic maintenance item but have not moved forward with the idea. Start-ups on an HSP would be sooooooo easy if you could gaurantee more accurate feeder 0,0's.
