Hi,

Sorry to bore you all with more ROHS stuff but...

As part of the ROHS/leadfree changeover we're left with one type of component where we are getting mixed messages re-exemption.

Is there a list anywhere which details parts that are exempt form the directive?

The part concerned is a windowed Eprom.

i Havent found a list but the Department of trade and industry in the UK have issued guidelines which make it a little clearer than the EU directive. http://www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability/weee/index.htm link in latest information section.

Thanks for that.

It's definitely a tricky one, with lots of yet to be confirmed exemptions.

It's particularly confusing with this type of product as it is said to be up for exemption due to lead in the glass of the erase window. However, does this then mean that the pins are also exempt and can be tin/lead?

This would have a big impact as existing stock could be used, instead of put into landfill like the directive is designed to avoid....

Hi Each homogenous material is considered individually not the component itself. So in this case the glass may be exempt(Im not sure it should be exempt?) but the solder for the leads wont be.

The supplier has sent us a number of responses, starting with it's compliant, then stating it's exempt, then telling us it should be fine.

This has helped us to pursuade our customer to go to flash based memory, and hopefully solved the problem this time around.

All of our Far East suppliers have been a dream to deal with, as have most of the "Blue Chip" manufacturers, but there are always a few that just don't seem to get it or be interested.
