Draining a Solder Pot- | 27 September, 2005

Does anyone one have any suggestions on what containers to use to put the solder (lead) into? We used aluminum bread pans last time since we wanted to reuse the solder and that was not such a hot idea. It took forever to tear the pans apart to get the solder out. We did not use teflon coated ones because we were told the teflon would outgas toxic fumes. Any ideas are appreciated.

Hi Steve, When I drain our wave solder pot in preparation for loading a lead free alloy (SN100); I am going to use muffin tins dusted with baby powder or maybe a little high temp oil so that the solder doesnt stick to the tins. I know that this may take us some time to drain 450 pounds of solder, but I believe that in the end it will be better. I'd rather lift an ingot that weighs 1-2 pounds than one that weighs 25 pounds.

Contact your solder supplier and ask if you can borrow the moulds that they use when they cast the solder. We have done this before to empty one of our wave solder pots. We didn't have to coat the moulds with anything at all, just fill them up, cool and turn out.

Use "Bakers Secret" Teflon coated loaf pans to make the nicest solder ingots that you have ever seen.

We hope you are using the term "draining the solder pot" euphemistically. Using the drain on the bottom of the pot is dangerous. [Too much can go wrong, don't do it.] You should be ladling the solder from the pot onto the pans.

Don't forget to turn-off the fire rods as they become exposed during this emptying process.

Yes, I've used the muffin tins. I drained a solder drag pot. Steve makes a good point about the drain valve. When I drain my pot, I will be scooping out the solder and filling my tins.

How do you drain out the solder at the bottom ? I thought most solder pots have a channel from the pump impeller to the bottom of the nozzle. When you get down to that point is that when you use the drain?

I've managed to not have to drain a big pot, but if I ever have to what is a good way to get at that last few inches?

Sure, using the drain for the last portion, that's difficult to ladle-out, is fine. Be aware that the drain may not be as easy to close as you'd like.

Just be prepared! Once you open the drain you may not be able to stop the flow. Be sure that you get as much as possible out then have several pans empty and near by. On some pots it will look like there is very little left but you don't see it all.

We use chrome bowls to drain ours we have done it many times. They work like champ. I have never used the drain spout we just laddle it out. We are using the SN100C here, it is fanatastic. Quite a few process consideration must be made in order to get it to perform. But once the Engineering is done... it is very nice. Low drossing as well.
