I need some input to clear up some confusion I have with regards to what standard I should be using for workmanship on the pcb assemblies we produce. Should I be using the IPC 610b or the ANSI-J-STD-001B? What is the norm for the industry or is there one? What about the C versions of the above?

... of your boards, then you should be thinking A-610.

If you're aiming to manage and control your soldering processes, then you should be thinking J-001.

Either way, seriously consider version C. (That's the only version you can purchase from IPC, anyhow.) The following is a cut of the two document descriptions from the IPC web page.

The topics include component orientation and soldering criteria for through-hole, SMT and discrete wiring assemblies, mechanical assembly, cleaning, marking, coating, and laminate requirements.

IPC-A-610 is invaluable for all inspectors, operators and trainers. It provides the industry with a clear representation of electronics acceptability criteria based on the consensus of industry experts. Revision C has over 600 new and updated illustrations of acceptablity criteria and has been critically reviewed for clarity and accuracy. Expanded content over the previous revision includes more information on supported and unsupported holes, high voltage applications, jumper wires, and new SMT components.

The document's authors have contributed their expertise to making the document synchronize to the requirements expressed in other industry consensus documents, including IPC-J-STD-001.
