Hi All, I have been tasked with a project on the control of moisture sensitive devices and I was hoping to get some input from the experts out there... How do you monitor total exposure time for a MSD? If the packaging has been opened and re-sealed a few times, etc.

Hi Gavin,

Depends on what MSD class, but in general for the more sensitive parts if they've been opened & not used within the time limit it's rebake, add dessicant & seal.

Our distribution side splits them down into more manageable/production size quantities on receipt, then bakes & seals before shipping to customers.

N.B. levels are as follows (IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020C):

1 = unlimited exposure 2 = 1 year 2a= 4 weeks 3 168 hours 4 = 72 hours 5 = 48 hours 5a = 24 hours 6 = time specified on label

You need to account for the time and exposure of each MSD component during your production processes. * Barcodes * Software * Procedures * Training * Etc

The main problem that we have is the packaging for the MSD's can be opened and re-sealed a number of times before it hit's production, then it is opened again to be loaded into the machine and most of the time these parts are not consumed so they are re-sealed again. So it can be a nightmare to record total exposure time. What systems/ideas have you guys seen or heard of anything that can track this? Be it paper or system based.

Stick a label on the package with the initial opening time and date & the use by time, then check before using again.

Use the disposable indicator cards - if the are attached top the waffle packs they are getting the same exposure.

Get your suppliers to split into batch quantities for you on expensive parts.

If you can, store the excess components in a dry box which can maintain below 5%.

There is a system out there called Humitel from Brock Electronics. I havn't used it but saw it at Apex. You may want to call them to find out more about it. From what I know they have a sensor that attaches to the tray or reel that will constantly monitor exposure.

The indicator cards only show the current humidity, not the peak. They will revert back to blue if placed in dry conditions.

Sorry for the miss-understanding - there are at least 2 types of MSD cards - reversible & non reversible. We use the non-reversible type. Once exposed they record the max humidity through a one way chemical reaction.
