Has anyone done a comparison between the newer Metcal APR-5000 BGA rework and Airvac DRS24?

Were there significant advantages of Airvac over the Metcal that justify the cost delta?

Rgds, Pete

THE IS A REASON ITS FOR SALE CHEAP THE DRS 24 IS BEING SOLD BECAUSE ITS NOT SO GOOD FOR LEAD FREE BGA REWORK IT CANNOT RAMP UP THE PCB AND PARTS AT THE SAME RATE BECUASE OF THE HOT PLATE.ITS A OLD MODAL AND LOTS FOR SALE AT $10K AS NO ONE WANTS THEM I CAN TEL YOU WHO IS THROUGHING THEM OUT FOR FREE IF YOU REALLY WANT ONE. YOU NEED A SYSTEM THAT CAN DO THAT AND A PERFORMANCE TEST WITH T/C ON THE LID OF BGA SOLDER BALL AND AT THE UNDERSIDE OF THE PCB WILL PROVE WHO IS THE BEST. WE HAVE A FULL CONVECTION MACHINE NOT HOT PLATE AND WILL OUT PERFORM THIS MACHINE IN LEAD FREE AND ANYONE ELSE THATS WAHT TO COME ON FOR THE TEST IS WELCOME. I DO KNOW THALES AND DID ONE OF THE FIRST TRIALS FOR YOUR COMPANY IN FRANCE THEY BOUGHT PDR AND THIS WAS ALSO A MISTAKE AS IT WAS IR ALSO.4 YEARS AGO WE ARE WILLING TO PROVE WHAT A APR 5000XL CAN DO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CALL ME I AM AVAILABLE BY EMAIL OR PHONE NEXT WEEK . ALL FOR NOW PAUL WOOD WHERE ARE YOU IN THE WORLD?

I prefer to buy equipment from sales guys that can at least spell. Wonder what the "comparison test" was like?

Paul, better listen to Fastek!

Just be Careful!

We had purchased a Metcal VPI-1000 endoscope. When we began to have problems with the system, I found that Metcal had sold the product. When I asked for the current owner, I was told that could not be disclosed as the official announcement had not yet been made.

For two weeks we basically floundered and ended up fixing it ourselves. The new owner did step in at the last minute but not until after a considerable amount of pain.

We will rethink our options when it comes to thier products.

Good Luck

C

P.S. We do have a DRS24. There is a retrofit needed to do Lead Free rework. I think that even with the retrofit, it is pushing the capabilities of the preheater unit. I'm sure this will change on future units but it is working for us at the moment.

Sorry to hear of your problems with your VPI-1000. As most people know the VPI line was transfered over to the Easy Braid Company last July. With most changes of this type there can be some initial confusion and and unneccessary stress placed on endusers of the product. Should you ever experience this type of problem with anyones product, your local manufacturers representative should be able to help. They typically can get you in contact with your local facory support to get the problem solved. I know of many VPI users who continued to recieve excellent support throughout the transition period.

Thanks for allowing me my 2 cents.

Hi Folks, Does anyone know whether the following machine can do Lead-Free BGA rework? Also how much you would recommend to pay for this machine? Please advice! Your input is greatly appreciated. ================================================ Air-Vac DRS24C BGA and Surface Mount Rework System, Upgraded To Current 4.40 Software With SmartTrack Thermal Profiling Software, Included Custom IAC ESD Workstation, SN 9905-3016 ================================================ Thank you in advance and have a nice day, -C_Nguyen

I think Peter gave up since I have not seen anything from him since original question on comparing Metcal to Airvac. I personally prefer SRT to either of these two. SRT proven that the software and its' semi or full auto operation is superior to any BGA repair equipement out there. I have used SRT in two of my previous jobs and Airvac in another. I am using Metcal now, but still prefer SRT any day. It is ease of process control and operator friendly. You all know how much headache is when operators start doing their own process. Anyway this is just a informational response.

Thanks guys. Mike

Guys I do not know what you guys are trying to prove. If you have a BGA job to be done JUST forget about using any equipment that is using hot air since you will get into a lot of trouble. It will bend the PCB and need nozzole for each IC find an ERSA IR machine since we were using hot air (PACE ) for three years and we will never look back since we are using ERSA. They are expensive but I swear by them. Thanks Ahmad

Hi Ahmad,

I am using SRT 1100 for about 4 years. I like it but I am looking for something better. What ERSA Model you are using? Is it IR/PL 650A? I do BGA Reworks almost everyday. The most difficult Reworks I have had so far are a very small uBGA with ball pitch from 0.5 mm down and all new MLF/QFN (fine leadless package). Do you and others can give me any inputs? I am looking also for a Rework System that can do micro dispensing of solder paste.

Thanks in advance.
