We currently have an old CCA assembly that a customer wants us to build but are unable to produce the gerber file or milars that were used to build them the last time. All we have are hard copies of the PWB drawing. Is there anyone out there that can create a gerber file from the PWB drawings?

Most likely this can be done if the board does not have any inner layer artwork. Are there schematics available? if so a design shop can basically re-design the board from these.

Kinda makes you wonder if the product truly belongs to your customer, doesn't it?

There should be a marking or legend on the bare board that identifies the board fabricator. That fab should have artwork / gerber data for the board.

The CCA drawing actually does belong to our customer as it is a DOD contract. We were the last ones to ever build the cards but since so much time has passed since the last build all of our PWB vendors like us have probably purged their systems of all the old documents and software. We do have 3 boards that are totally built up from the last build but that doesn't really do much for us. The PWB vendor that built them for us last time did not retain the gerber and it is a multi-layer board.

Have you considered engineering a new board with the same form fit and function? It might be easier than reverse engineering the board. But then you did say it was a DOD contract, so I guess that might mean all kinds of hassle to prove a "new" board.

Thanks to all that replied but now I have a new problem. I actually did come across the gerber files............but there on reel to reel tapes. Does anyone know of a company that has the ability to read the magnetic reel to reel tapes and dump the files to another media format?

Well, at least they're not drawn on parchment paper or chiseled into stone.

Have you tried contacting the D.O.D. about getting these transferred onto something else?
