There are several things that can cause these errors. It sounds as if you have 2 problems. A (Z) problem and a theta problem.

1. Check that the Z-locks are functioning properly in the service program. Make sure that when they are un-locked they don't catch on the Z unit. 2. Check the blue ribbon cables that are on either side of the X wagon for cracks. They usually crack under the hold down clamp right before they plug into the XWB. 3. Check the ribbon cable that goes from the Z-fi unit to the XWB board for cracks.

Since you are seeing 2 problems I am thinking it's probably a cracked cable.....although I have seen other things cause these errors as well.

Give this stuff a try and let me know......

Thanks for reply

we have found a blown fuse on the back plane for the mot-z pcb . But we now have problems with Z height, i am trying to auto-teach devices from the tray wagon (qfp etc) and it is not always lowering the nozzle to the component. i have done base centering measurements and this is not very consistent. it then comes up with a message saying z measurement unstable. any ideas on how to calibrate the z axis would be much appreciated.

Make sure your matrix tray is up high enough. The components in the matrix tray should be at least at board level. Also check your component height in the package list.

If all that is OK then, check those Z locks I spoke of earlier.

New morning but still the same agro'. The story so far - Have checked the fuse on the back plane and it had blown again, changed it has been ok. Swapped the mot-z board around with piggyback mi card, no new other/moved problems. When doing base center meaurement it goes ok at first and then comes up with the z unstable measurment. It also seems to be making a "screeching" noise on fast movement. Also done friction tests for z 1st 2.664 N 2nd 3.069 N 3rd 4.553 N 4th 4.351 N 4.216 N (not sure what results i should be getting)

Quick update, it has blown the fuse again on z (that now makes 3).

Cheers

Did you check the ribbon cables on either side of the X axis for cracks ?

Ive just checked all the cables that i can see and there seems to be nothing wrong. Have just put a brand new fuse in to mot z card and it has blown it. machine boots up, initiate the hardware and everything goes ok until it does the z height then it travels to the bottom point and stops there.

Any ideas?

Colin,

At this point you may consider calling in Mydata. I told you the basic things I have seen cause your problems.

It sounds as if you may have a bad card, and or short somewhere.

Possibilities: XWB Small booster on the front of the computer box Big booster in the back.

?????

Good luck

have been through somethings with an engineer on the help desk and the concusion is that it is the z motor with the encoder that is causing the fuse to go so have ordered another. Not cheap though at nearly 500.

Thanks very much for your help, it is always good to have someone elses perspective.
