Industry assembly procedures say: * ANSI/IPC-A-610, in section 3.4.1, as a guideline, indicates that "There must not be any eating, drinking, or use of tobacco products in the work area." * ANSI/J-STD-001, in section 3.7, "Eating, drinking, and/or use of tobacco products shall be prohibited in the workarea."

How do you handle drinking water in the production area?

We allow it (water only) as long as the bottle has a closed lid. We determined this to be acceptable since water is already present at each station for solder iron cleaning. We allow no other eating or drinking of any type.

I our shopfloor, we are allowed to drink water. I think that if it is prohibited to drink water in Production, then there must be like short breaks so that one can go and drink water from the canteen. It is always a headache when it comes to decide such things. Personally, it does not effect me as I do not have the chance to drink anything during work, apart during my break time, when I do have break!!!

Hi,

We had quite a bit of problems when we allowed popcorn onto the shop floor, so we changed to M&M's but the problems persisted. We changed our operator feeding process over to KFC, and ever since there has been a dramatic improvement in production yields.

We allow only water in production area; but only ESD-safe containers with a cap, and the owners name on a sticker. The water bottles must not be kept on top of the machines, conveyors or nearby components/pcb:s

We think this is no problem at all, and one positive benefit with this is; when people drinks a bit of water during the day, they tend to be more sharpen and alert. As You all know, drinking coffee during breaks actually dehydrates your body...

I suppose you could slow down the belt speed on reflow enough, but not sure on the long term effects of flux contamination or it's impact on flavour.
