Mesh Size Vs. Particle size of silver inks | 19 November, 2004

Hi, Is anyone aware of the Mesh sizes(Screen Printing) that are against specific silver particle sizes. Like in case of solder for different types of paste, different mash sizes are recommended. Is anyone aware of any such things in the case of silver inks?

Short answer: Yes.

Depending on the application of the conductive ink, suppliers select different mesh for the silver particles. So, you should follow your supplier's recommendations for printing, for instance:

Conductive Ink||PI-2000 Highly Conductive Silver Ink Screen Types||Metal or polymer mesh Screen Mesh||100 to 325 Stainless Steel is recommended Screen Emulsion Thickness||13 to 23 Gap between screen and Substrate||0.5 to 1.0 mm is recommended Squeegee Hardness||60 to 80 Shore A Squeegee pressure||Dependent on size, print definition and screen type. 8 X 10 screen. 3 to 5 Kgs Speed||5 to 10 cms/Second

Mesh opening size may be a factor in whether or not the paste will pass but only in very fine line deposition. Generally speaking, the printed line width and deposition thickness determine what mesh to use. The paste supplier will be able to tell you the minimum opening size the silver needs to pass freely. You can find mesh opening info on all of the supplier websites. Dynamesh, Sefar, Saati, Asada, Bopp, etc.
