Ionising Air Gun PM Procedures

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Can anyone recommend a procedure for testing the efficacy of ionizing air guns (high voltage electric) on a routine basis in terms of a preventative maintenance? I know that you can get carried away with charge decay plate etc.....but in the real world what other ways can accomplish this task?
