Morning all, Can anyone recommend a simple low cost method to spray apply conformal coating to our PCB's. Looking for something simple, semi-automatic, and repeatable for operators to use without problems. This is a very low volume application, approx one 40 board batch per month. Thanks in advance... JD

JD,

Have you considered manual dipping? For that low of a volume, the purchase cost and maintenance wouldn't seem economical but I'm not in your shoes.

With hand dipping, you don't have the thickness control you may need but it can be done. If your application doesn't get too tight with thickness tolerances, you might give the manual method a look. Just make sure you have good ventilation and understand your local environmental requirements.

We agree with Hoss. Dipping is far more controllable and less expensive than spraying for the casual user. An alternative to consider contracting your coating requirements. Amoung the service providers are: * http://www.newenglandcoating.net

* http://www.advancedcoating.com

Your coating materials supplier can give you a fairly straight skinny on the costs and facilities requirements for varous alternatives.

Hi,

You may look into PVA 650 which cost around US$40K for a unit. Let me know which company you are or which location will you be and I shall get my team to visit you and let you know more about this sysytem.

Danny: Beyond the US$40k that you mention for the machine, how much money should be budgeted for: * Facilities cost for spray room contruction, venting / filtration, fire proofing, etc? * Operating costs, such as training, maintenance, operation, etc? * Other costs, not mentioned

I'll third the motion for hand dipping the boards. One other idea is to get coating in a can. Many companies will supply coatings in aerosol cans for touch up and small usage.

Ok, so as it turns out our vendor may be buying us the dispensing system to you on their product. Any suggestions now for a system in the 25K range....things are looking up!
