Ion Contamination level allowed on Connectors | 21 September, 2004

Hello, does any one please can tell me if any Standard says how much is the Total Ion Contamination ( ugr/NaCl sqcm equivalent, Br- in particular way) allowed on Connector surface/body ? (ie. DIMM connectors, and similar).

PS: TIC on PBA, according to IPC-JSTD-001c is 1,56ugr/cm2 NaCl equivalent, but not found news about TIC on components/ Connectors/ PCBs (?) as well.

We are aware of no such standard. You need to determine the acceptable level for your product in its use environment.

Thanks Davef,

unfotunately in order to keep TIC of PBA inside our customer TIC requirements, we have to pre-wash (DI water only)connectors before assembly. Too high level of Br- continuosly get released by connectors molding compound. Our assembly process, is clean : WS paste and Fluxes.

What could be the electrical/ chemical reliability risk or effects if we have Br- concentrated on Dimm connectors ? Electromigration could occour ?

PS: connector supllier even considered this pbm and they say no standard define ion contamination level for connectors. Right, but the pbm exist.
