ESD Labels on Workstations, mobile carts, shelving, mini-tables, chairs .... | 31 May, 2000

Dear SMTnetters

I am using EIA-625 : 1) I was just wondering whether I should be putting ESd Labels for each workstation ( Station #s) In addition to standard ESD protected workstations, I am using chair, mini-tables, carts, shelvings... for handling ESDS items. All these items are grounded. Mobile stations/ carts/ minitables ( to place WIP tote boxes near operator). I need to assign station #s. I like to know if it is general practice / requirement to put ID# on all items. Except tables, most other items move around. My maintenance rep. is saying only tables be assigned ID# and assigning ID# to all these items will generate lot of work ...... 2) I was wondering if anyone using lids on tote boxes while carrying / moving WIP.

Dear Ashok,

My practice is that if you see it as a source of a potential problem, label and monitor/measure/test it.

OK, so it may be a lot of work up-front, but what is the risk involved in not doing it ??

There is no grey area, do all or nothing.

The benefits will far outway the overheads.

Most "kit" we have is designated by an asset number or workstation number, so a register of number, test, pass/fail, frequency etc; should be relatively easy to set up.

If you need more in depth help (ie form design) drop me a line.

P.S. I dont know if you find this, but production staff normarlly buy into ESD protection, but design guys (bless 'em) dont believe it exists !!!! Regards,

Chris May.

Hey Ashok: On your questions ...

1 If you measure those things, then you should be recording your efforts. Think of that stuff as calibratable equipment.

2 Use the covers
