I am looking for equipment suggestions for cleaning PCB Assemblies using the small dishwasher type cleaners. I have seen and used them before but cannot remember the manufacturer etc and have not been able to find any info on these type of cleaners. Does anyone use these and what info could you provide?

We use a small DI water generator feeding a diaphram type pressure tank going to a standard dishwasher. We have some filters in-line also to prevent white residue on no-clean boards. I cant think of a good reason to buy a $5,000 board cleaner rather than a $500 dishwasher at Sears. Im sure the guys that make the cleaners can think of a few.

To address the last sentence of the recent posting, Austin American Technology does have experience with board cleaners as described. More recently AAT developed a cleaning system simliar to your description called the AquaBatch.

The AquaBatch was developed to offer features not available with just a dishwasher. Such features include:

- QC resistivity check providing pass fail reporting, and, controlling the number of rinse cycles until the minimum specified resistance is met.

- Individual control of wash, rinse and dry process times and temperatures.

- Computer control.

- Data logging for SPC, logging critical parameters of the cleaning process. Data available in a spreadsheet or printed format.

- Configuration for closed looping the wash and/or the rinse chemistries.

- Integral heating of hot DI water for water wash cleaning.

- Integral transfer system for remote drainage.

- Integral heavy metal recovery chelation resin tank to remove lead and other heavey metals before discharge to drain.

Hope this helps,

Hi, I have used these type systems in the past and had trouble with white residue and flux removal under low standoff components. All cleaning systems need DI water and this requirement adds another layer of system cost if you don't have DI available. I am not aware of any dishwasher type systems still available on the market. I can recommend some larger batch and in line systems if you would like to discuss them. Call me at 215-364-6100 and ask for Denis. Good Luck!

Silverado,

To answer your specific question, there are several manufacturers of batch-format cleaning systems.

Aqueous Technologies www.aqueoustech.com

Austin American www.aat-corp.com

EMC www.emcgti.com

UnitDesign www.unitdesign.com

Each manufacturer (includng us) will be more than happy to provide compairsons between dishwashers and their equipment. They will also be eager to discuss the diffferences between their individual brands (not appropriate here).

I, and everyone on this list would never recommend a household dishwasher. Although they have been successful in some applications, modern applications including no-clean, lead-free, BGAs, flip-chips, ect are not normally associated with dishwashers. Additionally, SPC reporting associated with ISO / Six Sigma, etc, is difficult with a Maytag.
