forming axial-lead for elavated horizontal soldering to SMT pad | 26 May, 2004

hi, we have a batch-rework for a axial 2-lead LED component. we are thinking of bending both ends of the axial-leads into a L-shape at 90degree angle, and solder the flat-end of the L-shape flatly to the PCB's SMT pad.

hope the experienced guys/experts can share: 1) if this is an acceptable component-lead modification?

2) and does this mod meet any existing IPC specs?(did a internet search but no result)

3) would there be any quality/reliability concern to such bent-leads soldering?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Q1) if this is an acceptable component-lead modification? A1) Yes, it's acceptable

Q2) and does this mod meet any existing IPC specs?(did a internet search but no result) Q2) IPC repair guidelines are: 7711A/7721A - Rework and Repair Guide For other repair guidelines, look here: http://www.circuittechctr.com/guides/guides.shtml

Q3) would there be any quality/reliability concern to such bent-leads soldering? A3) Assuming good practices are used, no.
