motor control algorithm for pick & place machines | 8 March, 2004

Hi everyone....I'm a student working on a short research project on industrial control algorithms - and part of the scope that we are looking at is SMT pick and place machines.

I was wondering if anyone knows what type of control is used for the nozzle heads....is it just a standard PI controller, or something a little more complex like PIV? We're more concerned about the control of the actual head, not higher level control like the AOI stuff....

Thanks, Dave

Differant machines have differant types of control. smoe use pulse motors with encoders and are controlled by PMD pulse motor drivers. Most of these will have parameters to determine things such as fast over shoot, speed for certian tools and varations for limatations of tools locations for stops ect.. Other machines like the HSP may have many heads picking and analizing and handleing of the parts simotainously up to 12 parts. How this magic works is to devide functions and have a timeing or dwell between functions each having it's own controller. At any given time the machine will be testing for proper thickness of one part and at the same time it will be rotating another while still looking at a third part to get it's orentation ect. all at the same time.
