Permanent Marking Ink for ID# on PCB while circuit board is being built on Flowline | 3 July, 2000

In a typical flowline assembly of circuit boards, what are the different methods used for tracking WIP ?

I can think of :

1. travel cards - not suitable for panelised boards 2. Marking ID# on board at various operations while board is being built. that communicates next operation - completion of previous screening operation and who did it 3. Apply labels - cost could be issue as more you add info, higher the cose will be

Though method at sr no 2 is flexible and cost effective but has limitation that the marking may inadvertently removed due to handling or spot cleaning during processing or rework / repair.

I am looking for a Marker Pen which has ink suitable for PCB marking and it does not dissolve into alcohol readily. Any suggestion on Marker or alternate method will be highly appreciated.

The soldering process is NC. Spot cleaning is unavoidable. smearing of ink " sharpie pen" inadvertently is again unavoidable. We are looking for Marker Ink which can bear the handling / such situation.

For Canadians, belated Canada Day and for American, wish you America Day .

Ashok-

Rather than ink, consider using a paint marker. This is much more permanent (not easily removed with alcohol), is easily applied, comes in a "pen" like magic markers. Many pen tips available and a large choice of colors too.

The down side is a bit of a drying time, otherwise it is a good choice.

You ought to consider Data Matrix directly marked on the boards It can be done with laser, inkjet, or other permanent marking methods. Never falls off, can be read even if 30% is obliterated.

For an example, check any AMD (K6, K7) or Intel Pentium class CPU and Palm (formerly 3Com) board- they use it.
