Our company is in the process of acquiring an AOI machine.

Any recommendation as to what type? Does anyone have any evaluation report to share with me?

If your operation is hi-mix low-volume, consider taking a look at some of the bench-top units out there. They are lower cost but can give similar performance as higher cost in-line systems. Some of the bench-tops cannot do solder fillet inspections though.

Some of the bench-top AOI vendors have an upgrade path to their in-line systems whereby all the programs created for the bench-top will run in the in-line. From my experience there are three main criteria for AOI equipment evaluation- software- lighting- software. Good cameras and programmable LED lighting are common these days. You'll find the differentiator is software. The nice thing about the bench-tops is that its easy to get a demo in the comfort of your own facility. If in-line is your need, here are some others to look at:

Take a good look at Yestech. The in-line machines are under $100K with off line software. I think about $80K if you dont need side cameras. We replaced our Agilent SJ-10 with one and have been very happy with it. Last I knew the good benchtops out there were around 60K and the good inlines upwards of 150K.

We also have a benchtop by Mirtec and we are very satisfied. We also have an inline machine by Viscom.

I do recommend look at a benchtop.

Technicly Marantz and the Mirtec are almost the same. But the software of Mirtec is easier to use and has some extra's.

We had both and choose for the Mirtec.

Depends a lot on what you want to solve. Very low volume conformation of componpents down to legends, process control or inspection of assembly.

Biggest problem is they are resource hogs. Most require constant attention. Any change in component supplier or process will result in a change at the AOI machine. Those last minute part substitutins will show up at AOI. The purpose of the machine is detect change and that is one it may detect.

If you can stick with them and learn their limitations they will pay off. As a process they are more like a wave solder machine than a placement machine.

Hi Carl,

We have several Mirtec MV2BTLs. We had done an extensive evaluation on tabletop systems only, as we did not have the available real estate to add an inline. We are using the system to verify value (when visible) orientation, presence/absents and solder bridges. We have just started implementing the new software and are starting to add solder inspection. We do all 1st pc. inspections of repeat jobs and 100% post reflow inspection and are experiencing very good results.

We also have an older Viscom inline. It was complicated at first, but with the upgraded software package implemented in October, it has become quite effective. We use it to detect ID, orientation, solder inspections. So far, we have been happy with it.
