We received some parts from our stores room with out a part number. We have 2 to choose from one being a 5% and one being a .1%. Does the color of the resistor mean anything? Just need some help on this. Thanks.

Measure the resistance of 100+ components and calculate the tolerance

3 digits usually means 5% i.e. 103 = 10K 5% 4 digits means 1% i.e. 1002 = 10K 1% Otherwise you will have to use Dave's method.

The color does mean something, If you know the manufacturer their spec sheet will tell you. The three and 4 digit only applies to larger resistors, There are 1% 0603 that have only 3 digits. You may want to just call them all 5%.

An explanation that could possibly help (depending on the exact code on these parts) is on http://www.marsport.demon.co.uk/smd/res.htm. The author of this ends the page with a "Personally, I'd check with an ohm-meter!".
