Anyone use glass filled nylon connectors utilising the intrusive reflow techique (pin in paste). We are having probe with them becoming brittle after reflow- apparently due to moisture. We are also seeing bubbling on outside plastic.Peak oven temp 224 degrees. Glass content 43%. Has anyone used this type of material before and what did you do to solve the problem?

You need a nylon with a heat deflection temperature [heat distortion temperature] - 0.45MPa ( C ) similar to your reflow peak. The HDT of the nylon in your connector is probably ~200*C.

Marc,

There are many types of nylon used in the connector industry and some are designed to be used in high temperature (225-250C) oven reflow applications. These high temp nylons are usually types 4/6 and 6T.

It sounds like you are either using a connector molded with a nylon type not designed for high temp oven relow (type 6/6) or, you are using a high temp nylon that was not properly molded (i.e., "wet molded" or improperly dried prior to molding)

We use HTN (high temperature nylon - Zytel) connectors in our reflow ovens with no warping, bubbling, or cracking. You can also use PPA (Amodel).
