Fine Pitch Components

Fine Pitch Components | 21 July, 2000

Is there a chart available to use in identifying the pitch of fine pitch components - one with which a components leads could be matched ( similar to that of the component's "footprint" on the pcb ) ?

Hello Nick I'm not aware of any published 1:1 footprints. couple of options: Topline dummy show and tell display cards. $$ I believe. Since there aren't that many different pitches, get one of each and glue those puppies to a card. Could be new, dead, dummy, surplus store, whatever. Take one of each pitch, put them on the copier with the lid up. Viola - tremendous shot of white leads against a black background - uses a lot of toner however. Tried it on an old copier and a 20 mil that was laying around - perfect. Actually, except possibly for the difference between a metric and JEDEC package (example, 19.7 mil to 20 mil) your eyeballs will quickly calibrate and you'll just know. John Thorup

Nick, Like John says, it will only be a short time and you will "just know". In the meantime you might want to try - 1. All the placement machine manufacturers have show pcbs for the exhibitions, many of these show pitch and package types on the silkscreen overlay.Ask around their reps and I'm sure you'll get one. 2. Buy yourself a little measuring microscope, some have scale in both metric and imperial, you want the one with a field of view of about 10mm with a scale division of 0.02mm. These are the little hand held monocular units that all the pcb manufacturers use for measuring hole diameters, registration etc. You can also use them for aligning stencils very accurately! Buy one anyway, they are only about $100 max.

Sorry, scale division on that would be 0.05mm not 0.02mm. Magnification x24 or thereabouts. Also great for measuring all sort of things on pcbs, stencils etc to see if they come within spec.

Nick...I use a pair of digital calipers with no problems. all you do is measure one lead and zero the calipers with that reading on the display. then measue across 2 leads and the number is displayed is the pitch! That's the way I do it.

Nick: I got two choices for ya: 1 Call your supplier, have 'em send ya an outline drawing, and read the pitch from the drawing. 2 Buy a vernier caliper and measure the center to center spacing of the leads.

Good luck
