i'm newbie to this forum, I have a question about Cp and Cpk, nowaday, what number of ppm your company targets. Also as a SMT engineering you guys operate the whole smt line from SPM to ICT, has your company let you calculate the Cp and Cpk or there is a special group responsible to this issue?

I've heard my professor said his company "visteon" now targets around 20ppm. and the Cp must > 1.67 to allow the TQM meets company's requirement. good luck, Capone.

Hi AlC,

Q: Who calculates Cp, Cpk.

It depends on the company, it's size and structure. Some expect the SMT / Process Engineer to do this work and others have all kinds of other groups involved.

AlCapone: Consider determining the responsible party according to their ability to deal with the complexity of collecting and analyzing the information required to determine your process capability index. For expample: * Reflow oven: Fairly simple, just run a profiler, record the data, determine process stability and control, and calculate the index. * Placement machine: Fairly complex, place glass components on glass board, compare placement with expectation, record the data, and calculate the index.

There was an OnBoard Forum last Spring on this topic. It was a bit commercial and superficial for our taste, but there maybe some snippets of information there for you. Consider reviewing those threads.
