Monitoring Cleanliness of No-clean Assembly | 26 June, 2003

Wanted to inquire if anyone has a way to monitor cleanliness of boards that are assembled with a no-clean process. I'm aware that incoming board cleanliness can be monitored, however, I am after checking of cleanliness of boards after assembly.

With the use of alcohol in a bulk ionic test system (Omega Meter) or Ion Chromatography system, we have found it will typically turn the no-clean reside white.

It's a excellent idea to monitor the cleanliness of your components and soldering process. Consider running a spare board.

We have considered running a spare board with each job as a possible solution, however due to the cost of the assembly, this would not be preferred.

Running a spare board with each job would be expensive. Consider running boards: * That were scrapped by your fabricator. * Without components. Admittedly you loose a measure of the contamination provided by your component suppliers, but if it's a fairly high tech board, there's little surface area in parts. * That were scrapped by your fabricator without components. * With coupons that you analyze separately. * Less often than you planned.
