Hi,

I have to protect A small 3v battery power circuit with 2 layer PCB in plastic box against Air ESD. What is the best PCB layout for this purpose.

Here's one approach: http://www.littelfuse.com/PDFs/AppNotes/ec616.pdf

We have no relationship or receive no benefit from the company referenced in the above link.

Hi,

As I read and reread, I don't understand your question. Is it a design protection for in use?? Is it packaging while shipping protection?? What is the signifance of the 3Volts??

Hi,

1. The protection is for in use (to prevent ESD damage) 2. It is device that operate on 3v-battery, so its not connecting to earth.

My question what is the prefer PCB layout of maximum ESD protection.

Best regards, Erez

Hi

I don't know your PCB, circuit, or product application, and probably should steer you to at least the ESD Association http://www.esda.org/ for one place in case you find anything that you really love. I do know some of these people first hand and they have lots of know how. Also the HandHeld Wireless arena and the Toy arena deal with ESD which might be similar to your product application.

Shielding the circuit so that an ESD event will travel elsewhere and dissipate is one technique. Another with the shielding is using capacitors that respond to the high frequency and dump the event away from your critical circuit and allow for charge bleed off.
