Hi,

We use a mixture of plastic tape carriers and paper tape carriers for placing chip components. We are experiencing a problem which I know is a problem across the industry...when using the plastic carriers, the chip components stick to the tape causing jamming/misplacements...blues. I know this seems to be common thing, but I would be interested in knowing why this happens...predominantly on plastic reels.

Any answers appreciated.

Dougie, More info needed. (What type of feeders, Have they been modified for the different packadge types, Are the parts sticking to the cover tape or inside the plastic carrier tape........)

Zactly...what type and size of component. Pressure sensitive or heat seal cover tape? Manufacturer or service house taped? One or all manufacturers/distributors. Are the components in the right size tape? Reasonably recent production? Are they really stuck to something or just flying around. Three thoughts from personal experience: Misapplied or misregistered pressure sensitive cover tape and the component sticks to exposed adhesive. Old stock (usually) or exceptionally stuck cover tape. In this case the cover tape releases in a "jerky" manner that can knock the component right out of the pocket. Plain old bad feeder. good luck John Thorup

Thanks for the response.

To answer your questions... The compoments we are placing and experiencing trouble with are generally 1206 components. It isn't just one manufacturer either. The one part though we have most problems with though is a 100nF, 1206 ceramic capacitor. Irony is that this is the part that we use most of as it is used in all our designs as a decoupling capacitor so we use thousands of these things a day. As far as the feeders go they are standard Europlacer 8mm feeders that have not been modified in any way. I think John has answered my question though...from what I am seeing in the feeders and on the tape, the exceptionally well stuck cover tape theory looks like the winner. As I said (vaguely) in my first message, the components are sticking to the cover tape and also jumping out of their pockets, exactly as you said John. Looks like that's the reason for my blues, but the chances of getting the manufacturers to play a different tune are slim. I'm off to try and find a manufacturer who'll supply these babies in a paper tape. Easy life.

Hi Dougie I'd still look at the feeder. Have you tried loading this part in another feeder? We also use tons of this part and, in the last 6 months or so, they have all come in embossed plastic tape with no problems like yours. These are by Kemet. Good luck John Thorup
