how do you justify the use of a AOI. I have heard about CyberOptics AOI, have any of you?

Thanks

Hello Maribel, One way you justify the use of an AOI is to calculate how many defects the system will potentially detect before reflow, associate a repair cost per defect and make the calculation. For an AOI to be effective in this regard, it must scan nearly 100% of every board. Now based on pulse rates and required throughput, that may not be possible, but you'll have to find a balance of inspection time versus available process time. Keep in mind, you can't forget about thorough process setup with stencil design, board layout design, correct reflow characteristics, all the factors that should eliminate defects in the first place. AOI's are the extra protection that require proper programming and utilization to really be effective. I cannot speculate on the CyberOptics AOI system, but know there are many manufacturers that are supplying the industry. Let me know if you require additional assistance. Thanks!
