Settting up conveyors for a SMT line.... | 12 February, 2003

We are in the process of settign up an SMT line with conveyors. When planning for a 4ft conveyor (or 2 or 3ft for that matter), how mush space should I set aside for this? My boss is telling me to leave 4'6" for a 4ft conveyor. I think this is too much. I was thinking more like 4'2", if that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

4'2'' should be enough, going any higher and your bound for large gaps between machine and conveyor. Its been awhile since I set any up but i'm sure that 4'2 will be enough but not too much. I'm sure I wrote down my exact measurments, if I come across them i'll email or post'm.

Most conveyors are sold by the inch. I allow for no more than one inch gap between the end of the conveyor and the next piece of equipment. If you trust your measurements, 1/2 inch is best. This will allow for the smoothest transfer possible of small boards. If you feel you need some slop in your measurements, then go to the 1 inch gap.

I'm with Mike G, We use a 1/4"(1/8" gap on both ends)! We process very short boards from time to time and any more space causes transfer errors. Also, the very short gap helps alot when lining them up.

Just make sure you secure them in place once you get them where you want. Brackets fastened by bolts into the floor are the best. I know it may sound trivial, but many companies I visit simply ignore this step and they fight with their conveyors constantly.

I would agree on keeping the gaps to a minimum but make sure you have enough maintenance access to the pick and place and oven. Pulling a conveyor out with an 1/8th on either side is no fun. Same goes for bolting to the floor, make sure you can unbolt it if you need to.

Hello All- As per IPC SMEMA Specs the max gap distance should be .375" This standard can be downloaded from IPC's website at http://www.ipc.org/html/fsresources.htm This Doc has a fair amount of useful info.
