Cost estimating for benchmarking | 12 November, 2002

Hello Sirs,

I would really appreciate if somebody could help me to understand how these elements of cost bellow can affect the total cost of an SMT facility. I am studying these numbers for benchmarking purposes.

1) Equipment amortization 2) Maintenance (downtime) 3) Labor (direct and indirect) 4) Waste on assembly process

The question is: What is the percentage cost ( beyond comparison to the total cost) of these elements above?

Recognize that the cost of production changes substantially with factors such as: * Product maturity. * Production volume. * Product complexity. * Quality versus cost functions.

So, in your benchmarking effort, consider baselining your data according to similar factors.

Sammy Shina at UMass Lowell has done a lot of work modeling electronic manufacturing costs.
