Tray Parts and Velcro Straps | 6 November, 2002

Hello Everyone, I have been noticing a trend. Many tray packaged parts are now being supplied with velcro straps to secure the trays. Am I wrong in thinking that this is a major source of static electricity? All of these components are BGA, QFP, TSOP, etc..... They are usually the more expensive packages and are very static sensitive. Is this a problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeh, that RIPPPPP sound that seperating velcro makes is a real hint isn't it. Use your field meter to confirm your suspicions. We cut the straps.

We have tested several that have come in to our facility and all the ones we have seen so far are ESD safe matierial (black). I'll take these over rubber bands any day!

Not being a smart alic, just curious....... So if velcro is made out of that black esd safe material then it is safe to use around sensitive parts? Is there no static discharge or is it transferred to the tray and out the mat/wriststrap?

They could make carpet out of that stuff and market it to the industry

Uh, Great Idea..... There is and has been ESD safe carpet for years.

We have it in our manufacturing area right now.

How is the carpet tested/maintained? Are you still wearing the typical foot strap or did they sell you some other kind of footwear?

We have ESD safe velcro hook soled shoes for our operators. It keeps them at their machines.

Seriously, everyone I've seen using it just uses heel straps and vacuums the carpet. Granted, many of them looked like they could use a shampooing, but I don't know if it requires a special (no residue?) shampoo or not.

ESD safe and conductive are 2 totaly different situations. There are ESD safe carpets but I don't think I have seen coductive carpet. For heel straps to work in a carpeted area it would have to be conductive. Don't get the 2 mixed up it can cause dead bugs!

I have....they lay down copper strips every 10 feet or so , attached to house ground, then glue down the carpet.

The glue is filled with carbon filaments, as is the carpet itself.
