Hi, We are using chip components with Silver Pladium coating and finding poor wetting. We are using the water wash solder paste with 2Ag and std. reflow profile. Any suggestion how ti improve the solder wetting for those components. Thanks,

We found that a slightly more active flux was all we needed to provide sufficient wetting on the one AgPd part we put down. Unfortunately the paste we tried also slumped terribly, so we nixed that fix. It's a low volume product (50, once every 3 months), so we decided to live with it until we started feeling some real pain.

Your problem is likely not the Pd-Ag surface layers, but the underlying metal to which you need to wet. Either a base metal is: * Contaminated and poorly wettable. OR * A material [eg, Alloy 42 (check with magnet), Kovar, etc] that is inherently difficult to wet.

TI found an improvement in solderability on their Ni/Pd lead-finishes by using inert (nitrogen) reflow, but this is an expensive operation for just one part.

This may sound weird, however, I have to ask... what is pladium? I have a jeweler trying to sell me a ring made with pladium. Why can I not find information on it? Will someone please email me with information.

Now, platinum [Pt] is a very cool material for your ring, much cooler than gold or silver. It is a beautiful metal. [Nothing looks better than platinum and diamonds together.] Dagwood would have to caugh-up serious bucks for a ring like that, but you're worth it!!! [High maintenance chicks are always worth it!!!]

Try TI's website. They have almost completely phased in the use of Paladium on all of their IC's. Their website has many useful technical papers on Paladium.
