Can anyone help?

Our Solder bar suppier is discontinuing the Sn63 Pb37 solder that they currently supply us. Another company has offered us a 'direct replacement' which is their own Sn63 Pb37 solder bar. The only problem I have with this is that there are slight differences in the ammount of trace elements such as Antimony, Gold, Nickel, Bismuth, Cadmium etc, between the two.

This may not matter, but since I do not know the purpose these trace elements have in soldering I cannot yet recommend changing to the alternative supplier.

Does anyone know what effect these other elements have on solderability?

Thanks, Dave.

You can check with Alpha. ie Alpha had 3 different grade of the 63/37 bar, Vaculoy, Vaculoy SMG and HiFlo. You can consult with them and see which one fit for your current supplier.

Good Luck

You can reference to J-STD-006 for your minimum requirement. There have a higher purity of the alloy and excess the standard but the price is higher.

Search the fine SMTnet Archive for: The Effect Of Metallic Impurities On The Wetting Properties Of Solder by: Dennis Bernier Vice President, Research & Development Kester Solder Company [ http://www.smtnet.com//forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&CFApp=1&Thread_ID=1206&#Message5390& ]
