Hand Solder - time alloted per lead

I have a mixed technology PCB that has SMT all on bottom, TH parts on both sides (Yes, I realize that's bad. Can't be avoided.) We have designed a 10-up panel, 2 x 5 array. There are 50 leads per bd, 500 per panel. How much time is reasonable to allot for the population of the 3 connectors (20pin, 20pin, 10pin) then hand soldering, in a production push line setting? IPC-610 Class-2. Help!? Thanks, RS

If you allow 3 seconds for insertion of each connector and 2-3 seconds for each solder joint, then add a 10-12% contingency allowance you shouldn't be far out. Maybe get an averagely rated operator to build one on the clock.

Chris

There is not enough time in the day to reliably hand solder these connections.

Go buy yourself a solder fountain and spare yourself and your company the misery. Check the fine SMTnet Archives for sources of supply.

Everything has a price. A solder fountain is the price of your: * Designers sloppy design practices. * Companys lack of a rigorous DFM process.

Sure those products and other competitors listed in the fine SMTnet Archives provide a uniform solder deposit, how do you suggest that Russ provide the proper amount of flux and heat to properly form his solder connection?

Dave,

In response to your question on flux and heat application; the flux is already incorporated into the solder deposit and the connector usually solders in a standard convection oven profile.
