Knowledge of Contact 3SX Pick and Place Machine | 26 September, 2000

I'm trying get some help/advice/consulting on using a Contact 3SX Pick and Place machine. We've been using the machine for several months and have been successful placing parts (nothing smaller than 0805's so far). Recently, we are experiencing errors placing 0603's (mostly vision and pick errors) and really would like to talk with someone who is familiar with this machine so we can try to understand where to troubleshoot the problems.

Donna: Independent from your machine capabilities, for I dont know a Contact 3SX, one thing that I encountered is that its often a nozzle related problem when trying to pick a smaller part like in your case. Although a nozzle was specified for a certain component size for a machine service and field experience showed that a smaller nozzle would do a better job on that particular component. Make sure the nozzle is small enough that with your given tolerances a good contact to the component is possible and the nozzle doesnt show over the component edge for vision alignment.

Maybe that helps already

Donna,

We have a Contact 3AV system. Not exactly the same, but probably close enough to sort ou your problems.

Send an e-mail to aaronw@pearpoint.co.uk and relay your troubles. If anyone (here) can help, he can.

We use both a 3S and a 3AV. We do place 0603s and have tried 0402s which the machine is supposed to have the ability to place but will not do reliably in a production environment. We do have fairly good results with the 0603s, but we try to place them with the 3AV. Contact recommends using a 33 tool tip but I have found that the 09 works for us. Another thing to watch out for is make sure the feeder pocket is dead centered for picking. If you have any quetions on vison codes let me know.

Donna,

Please email me at nolefthere@yahoo.com and I will give you my work #. I would like to talk to you on this subject. I have been placing 0402s with a Contact 3AV machine since Nov 96. I have too many suggestions and comments to tell you here. I assume you are having vacuum errors. I have few vision errors but many vacuum errors. Make sure you are using paper tape and not plastic embossed tape. I use a 9 tip and not the 33 tip. The 33 tip causes many vacuum errors due to plugging. make sure your feeders are tweaked in. I am going to study placement of 0201 components on this machine soon. Please email me. I have spoken to Contact on many occasions about 0402 placement. I like the machine and it can place 0402s.
