Why is The Forum so slow now? | 16 March, 1998

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems to me that The Forum takes a lot longer to open up now. It also takes a lot longer to get back to the main Forum page, after reading an individual message, and hitting the "BACK" button. What's up? Is there a trick one can use to speed these processes up?

Advertising is how the bills get paid! I do not work for free and I am sure you don't either. SMTnet could change the format to allow the ad to run on top of the screen so we wouldn't have this ungodly wait. Time is money right. Or we could all invest in faster modems and ISDN lines to surf the Net, or we can "suck it up" The choice is yours. How about the trade rags? Are those articels by Siemens, Universal, or MPM Technical Articals or ads? A Design of Experiment can be easily skewed with faulty data but the Trades run these articels because they don't want to offend a good customer, they would rather lose credibility. You have a mind, use it!

Your web browser has the option with / without picture. The graphics of the ads may take the extra time you experience.

You implied that advertisements were causing the new delays that I sited, but you seemed to say that the SMTnet could display their ads in a way that wouldn't impose the annoying wait that we now experience. Did I understand that correctly? Jim Gustin

Children, Let's stop the squabbling. SMTNET is here for us to use. It may run slower but it is still a very effective and necessary tool. It's amazing, as we progress further into the information age, we become spoiled and frustrated about an additional three or four seconds of waiting. Those adds that you see are there to fund this site. Without them, there would be no SMTNET. I know the trade rags are becoming increasing filled with industry propaganda. "MY toy is better than your toy because MY study says so, just ask ME." I am a young engineer and I'm not overly excited about the trend. However, there is some useful information contained in some of those ADVERTISEMENTS (I didn't know that word was spelled entirely in capital letters either) What the industry has to realize is that there are some of us out here who can actually sort through all the bull. Those of us who can are more than likely going to be in an equipment procurement position at some point. When this happens, all the fictitious, lab created testing results in the world aren't going to get your product in my facility. Only the product itself will earn it's right to be purchased. Keep that in mind Ad guys. You may be able to sell to the naive but you will never make it into a respectable organization if your credibility is shot.

Re: Why is The Forum so slow now? | 17 March, 1998

Jim and all, I am with SMTnet and want to thank all of you for your participation in the SMT Forum. The recent slow down of the forum was caused by three factors: 1. The amount of data has increased. We keep 3 months worth of messages on the forum. As the forum becomes increasingly popular, this means a larger amount of data to load; 2. The two advertising banners do add loading time, currenly by ~1/3; We plan to reduce the memory size of ad banners in the future to increase loading speed. Ad income helps defray the cost of maintaining and improving our service. However, we are open to any suggestions as to other methods we can use to pay for the site; 3. We temporarily used table format for the body of the page to make the listing look better. However the table was directly responsible for the slowness that Jim experienced when first loading the home page and when "back"ing to the home page. We now realized that speed is more important than the look of the page, so we have removed the table format and you should notice the change. We are constantly seeking ways to improve our site and your input is always welcome and appreciated. Please feel free to e-mail me any time. Cunli Jia SMTnet cjia@smtnet.com

When I started in this crazy biz in 1972, there were NO mentors to speak of. There were NO trade rags. Info was held "close to the chest". the learning curve to become proficient was *very* long as compared to today's standards. I envy the newer folks to the industry. You have a wide world of info in your hands, and yet some of you insist on complaining about advertising..... May I suggest that those who don't like the ads go elsewhere. Kinda hard line, but sheesh! SMTNet has to float their expenses some way. Quit bitchin', and start learnin'! As the engineers of the future, your responsibilities are to filter through the BS and use the myriad of info that's available to you as Mfg / Process / Quality Engineers. A good engineer never knows *all* of the answers, but he / she *does* know WHERE to find them. This forum is potentially such a place. What a goldmine! A few advertisements on site to keep this thing viable for the administrators is a small price to pay for the info that's avail. on this forum. Just listen to some of us seasoned veterans; some of us actually have a few tricks up our sleeve--heck, we have the whip marks on our backs from the mistakes we've made, and we're willing to share our previous stupidities--just ask! Innovation is great, but sometimes the past can be a good teacher. -Regards- Scott

It is a lot easier to ignore the "BS" (as it has been put) when you are not forced to sit and wait (more than 3 seconds) for the content to load. Again, as one who is willing to voice displeasure with the changed process, I am saying Hip Hip Hooray for the even newer changes. In my estimation, the fact that SMTNet listened to the comments and took action is worth more than any advertising can gain. Again, Thanks SMTNet. Richard
