All, Does anyone know a good book, software, Check list etc. to analyze and develop the whole electronics assembly and manufacturing process ? I mean, not only SMD-process but also unit assembly and final assembly ? I assume that ultimate goal in the whole process should be to have: -less possible number of operations -workload of every single operations as light as possible. Any comments ? Brs, JoSi

I know it sometimes can be difficult to know exactly where to begin and where to look, but it really is a matter of trial and error customizing your searches to find exactly what you're looking for. I know, it definitely can burn a lot time sitting in front of a keyboard, but the information is out there. The more you surf, the quicker you'll get in finding things. Here's a few places to start: http:// www.smtplus.com This site is the homepage of SMT Plus, a company that was started by a man named Jim Blankenhorn. He specializes in the training of many different disciplines involved in printed circuit manufacturing, from designers to rework operators. He also carries a library of many, many different reference books on anything you can think of that has to do with printed circuit assembly. There's a listing of the books that you can purchase from him on his page. There's also a discription of each book along with the table of contents, so you can see if the book has what you want in it before you buy it. The next two places are what I found in doing a quick search after I read your post... http:// www.nerdworld.com/nw795.cfm This site I just stumbled on, but this link will take you to a Manufacturing Resources Page that is HUGE!! There's tons and tons of sites there! I'm going to have to go back there and do some exploring myself! This next site is one that I found on the Nerdworld page: http:// www.learnsoft.on.ca/mm.htm From what I read, this company is into training resources as well, it seems very interesting. It carries self-paced training programs on many different topics of electronic manufacturing on CD-ROM. There's a pretty good discription of the content they contain, and a bunch of testimonials from different companies on how effective it is. There's also a place on the page to request a trial CD-ROM from them (which I did). As to the last part of your question about the ultimate goal in a manufacturing process, I suppose you could say your statement is true, but it goes quite a bit deeper than that. I wish that there was just one blanket statement or rule that sums up what the ideal manufacturing process is, but there's so many variables. What works for me, may not work for you...it depends on what you're building and the resources you have available to you. I hope this was of some help... -Steve Gregory-
