We use a Seimens MS-102 and have found the techcical support offered by Seimens for this machine to be nearly non-existant.

We have both SiPlace 80-S and 80-F platforms. As a former mfg. eng with over 25 years' experience with insertion and placement equipment...... For our application (volume contract manufacturing, but with some proto work required at program inception), Siemens surpasses all others. The feeders on the platforms are superior to any other OEM's feeders I've ever dealt with. The platform is flexible, and changeovers take <7 minutes for us. We are extremely pleased with the reliability and repeatability of this equipment, and the service and technical support is superior. We have over 30,000,000 placements on the machine and we have approximately 3% down time per year. The machine is basicly built very well, however the feeders require a tremendous amout of maintenance and above all the Siemens service support is poor at best. To me Siemens has the worst service center in the industry. I generally spend the majority of the time training a field service engineer to recognize what the problem is before he can fix it. We just purchaced another SMT line and Siemens was eliminated immediately due to poor service.

For many years I was listening on the other end of the phone to service complaints of Siemens customers. Last year I became Siemens customer myself using MS 102 machines in my shop and also provide third party service. Siemens service has improved dramatically for all Siplace users. The down time we have experienced is significant. Up to 25%. The machines seem to deteriorate after 3 years of use. Ours are 3.5 years old now and I am constantly working on something at least for an hour a day. When I call technical help, I have found that I spend more than 50% of the time training or helping the tech understand what I mean (some of the help is experienced, though). When I do get them to understand, I get a correct answer(one that leads to a solution), about 1/3 of the time at best. Their main troubleshooting method is to interchange circuit cards or hardware with new parts. If you don't have the stock to replace parts, you are basically stuck as far as tech help is concerned. You get a lot of "well, it could be this card, or it could be..." Not a lot of definite answers that lead to solutions. I've been told to upgrade or buy new machines more than I've been told the root cause to a problem. I've even had issues that have gone unsolved that I've had to live with. Since I have only worked with Siemens equipment, I don't know other mfg'ers machines but I would be very hard pressed to consider buying Siemens equipment again.

I have found that the SIPLACE equipment is and will be supported more effectively as additional tools are made available for customer use. We have 21 SIPLACE machines 80S15's, S20's, F3's and F4's and We have NEVER experienced 25% down time. I find that customer service, field service and the help desk provide good solid support. I have found that their support has steadily increased in performance. I am currently in the process of taking advantage of their Remote Diagnostic service and look forward to their implementing their new database. The equipment allows for a centralization of your programming database, tremendous freedom in dealing with the vision system, as well as allowing for creativity in solving problems. Their service is the worst I've ever seen. The machine is down an excessive amount of time ( Approx. 20% )and getting technical support is next to impossible. Even when they do come in it takes them forever to get the machine operational again.

The performance of any piece of equipment is after all affected by its maintenance, operators and its treatment. Are your problems related to software, placement, mechanical or what? Personally I truly appreciate and enjoy this forum but keep in mind that if you want to post your opinions about any machine's performanace, good or otherwise, it would lend to your credibility if you provide details. Many times when problems occur not having a proper understanding of your equipment could lead you to the wrong conclusion. Also, help desk personnel works with what ever input you provide.
