| Should this Forum be used for unsolicited sales | pitches by new and used equip. vendors? Good Question! I am sure many viewers of the forum would say no, I mean Hell no, but why? I for one think it shows interest by the vendors and salesmen to get on the internet, view what people are having problems with or looking for and then maybe, just maybe, provide one person with a solution to a long standing problem. No one is forcing any of us to read the postings, so if we do then we can either respond or not respond and even better than that we can select not to read them at all. Wayne

:I would agree that if the vendor is responding to a post, then by all means, they are entitled. However, as I read it, the question was for an usolicited posting. | | Should this Forum be used for unsolicited sales | | pitches by new and used equip. vendors? | Good Question! Some forums get downright nasty about self promotion. I say it has its place separate from those technically concerned - unless it promotes technical questions and answers. That is, if some is selling personal, tool, or equipment capability, it should be directed to solving issues confronting us all (a new device to repair, etc.). and so on. Otherwise, let's start a chat room for those technically or financially challenged with specific rules governing each. Earl Moon

Re: Forum Used For Unsolicited Sales? | 20 April, 1998

Hi there ya'll... Well, seeing how we're all venting about the sales pitches we're seeing on the SMTNET, I'll go ahead and give some comments from the peanut gallery. I for one don't mind them at all...this ain't a mailserver like the IPC TechNet is, so our mailboxes ain't filling-up with junk mail that we didn't ask for...I probably would have a different opinion if it was. Most of the time (at least since I've been dropping in here anyway), people have been pretty good about putting something in the subject to let everyone know that they are trying to sell something, so it's a real simple thing...if you're not looking to buy whatever it is the message is trying to sell, don't read it...end of story. Actually, I kinda think it's a good thing...how many of ya'll have had some surplus equipment at one time or another but didn't know where to try and sell it? Most of the time in the past, I know the first thing I've done is look for some used equipment dealer who don't want to give you the money that it's really worth...they want to make as much money as they can (I guess I can't blame them...hehehe). I think it's nice to have someplace on the NET where you can post something you have for sale and not get flamed for doing it..hey, ain't that what the NET is all about? I know things can be taken to extremes, but I haven't seen anything close to being extreme here...I'm sure that if someone came on the SMTNETand posted 100 ads a day, we would be able to take care of em', no sweat! But let's not get our panties inna bunch over a few ads, I know it may be difficult to believe, but salesmen gotta make a living just like the rest of us...(GRIN) -Steve Gregory-

Sorry for offending a few of you | 20 April, 1998

About 1 1/2 month ago, I discovered this SMT forum and I am quite pleased about it since I've learned quite a bit through it all. Unfortunately, there are a few people who seem to have everything they need "equipmentwise". Well, I am glad for you. I really am. But certain others are really looking for certain items and can't find these specific items needed. A small company starting off in SMT cannot afford the luxury of you guys ( who are unhappy with my posting ) who have probably the latest comfortable technology. Well, I was once in that position, buying equipment for a small sub-contractor and paying the big price since I didn't know where to go. If you aren't looking for a deal in pre-owned equipment, chances are you are well equipped and don't need anything. GOOD FOR YOU. Some of the other don't have that chance. I won't pretend I am trying to save the world by selling pre-owned equipment to the smaller companies. I am trying to make a profit by turning unused equipment into needed equipment. And as certain people mentionned, (THANKS TO THEM) if it doesn't interest you, DON'T READ IT ! Most of these ads have a for-sale mention on the heading. Regards, Martin Plourde Selectron Inc. Martin: Please do not take all of this too personal. I do not think that was the case or the person posting the message would have given an email address to respond to. (?) I am a salesman, always have been! I view the SMTForm as being a very excellent place to meet new people, express interest, and offer suggestions. Won't make a living off from it and never entended to. Keep doing what you are doing. I think it is absolutely great. Separate Forum For Unsolicited Sales In The Works | 21 April, 1998

Should this Forum be used for unsolicited sales? SMTnet has stipulated (in the FAQ page) that the SMT Forum messages are meant to be technical and not to be used for unsolicited advertising. However, we have not enforced this rule since 1, there have not been many violations; 2, we wanted to see the response from our visitors. We appreciate the current discussions and are glad to see an understanding of the need for both the sellers to present their useful information and the readers to enjoy reading non-commercial information without interruption. To accomodate the needs of both advertisers and readers, we are launching a separate forum service, the PCB Capital Equipment Mart. Initial focus will be on selling and buying used equipment. Sellers will be able to post their un-needed equipment with detailed information. Buyers will be be able to list items they are looking for. We are also starting a Blue Book of used PCB equipment for everybody's reference. This new service will be available in ~2 weeks, at which time we will be more strict about maintaining the non-commercial nature of the SMT Forum messages. A note on Banner advertising. We recognize that the same banner ad becomes less interesting to our frequent users. We will be addressing this issue in the next few months as we redesign the whole SMTnet site. One of our thoughts is having revolving or randomly appearing banners. The site redesign will also make the Forum and other setions of the site more searchable. Again we appreciate the participation from you all. We want to thank specially the personal messages from some of you to SMTnet providing comments and suggestions. Please feel free to comment here or via my e-mail or phone below. Regards, Cunli Jia Director Product Development SMTnet cjia@smtnet.com 207-780-0887

Re: Thank you oh voice of reason | 21 April, 1998

I, for one greatly appreciate the free and open forum! You must have a balance between those who are (at least in their own minds) process experts and the "sales weasels". Is a consultant who uses the NET to promote their business any different than the guy that wants to unload a rework station? I find this site to be useful in gathering marketing input and I email my response to the party directly. Keep up the good work, and I would be interested in Advertising on your site as I noticed the advertising issue generated the largest response to any FAQ, and just look at the numbers on this issue!

Hello Cunli!!! I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this page, and thank-you for all that you've put into it! What's really impressive is that you watch what's going on and don't hesitate at all to change whatever you need to in order to keep everybody happy (within reason of course), talk about customer service!!! WOW!! The changes you're making are very good! I think you'll need to oil up your hit counter pretty soon, it's gonna get a work out!!! Thanks again!!! -Steve Gregory-

Oh we are now "Sales Weasels" and may I add you to this fine list of Gentlemen? I agree with you Jon and I know that the forum will have it's own way of weeding out the problem generators abd establish a happy balance between the two. Reading through most of the forum positngs I enjoy reading the problem responses more so than the "Selling of Equipment" I agree with the direct E-mail approach and also find this the best way to contact the individual. I do not feel there has been any Hard Sale tactics and the target person can always delete the email and that is end of story. Wayne

I agree with Wayne! My company, ETS, is a manufacturer of Solder Reflow and Curing Ovens. We are not a HUGE company like our competitors. We are a company of Engineers who focus on building good quality ovens and selling them at a fair price. We are not much of Marketing Experts, more Thermal Processing Experts. I bet you have never seen an advertisement for ETS in any of the Industry Magazines. We choose not to advertise in these magazines because we would rather use the savings to pass on to our customer and to pay our top quality representatives who find new customers. Small companies like ETS need every Free advertising resource they can find. I am sure I am not alone in this thinking. Sincerely, Brian Stumm PS- Anyone who would like to complain about my post may do so by writing me at ets@eznet.com (this e-mail address can also be used to inquire about our products or representation policies). ;-) | | | Should this Forum be used for unsolicited sales | | pitches by new and used equip. vendors? | Good Question!
