BULK FEEDING | 21 June, 1998

New developments in bulk feeding are making this process of feeding passive components more and more attractive to the PCB manufacturers, for whom the tape feeding for a long time was the solution. The rapid growth in the number of passive components per PCB, and the dramatic shrinkage of the component's size are the rising challenges for the PCB manufacturers. It makes the assembly lines unbalanced, because the so called, chip-shooters can not keep up and the the pick-and-place machines are not utilized in the best way. Reloading of the tape feeders is time consuming process, and in many cases the condition of the tape presents problems during cover peel off. Tape and reel are taking up space ten times larger, then the space required for the components they are carrying, they produce a lot of waste. Resisitors and capacitors are produced in bulk. Bulk feeding eliminates the cost of all the processes involved with placing the components into the tape and disposal of used tape and reels. Because the cost of the components has been reduced, the relative cost of the taping process becomes significant. Bulk feeders are faster then tape feeders because the componentsare are moving in the feeder with no gap between them, while the smallest pitch in the tape is 4 mm. This becomes a significant factor in increase of the multiple head machines throughput. Other advantage of bulk feeding is the better utilization of the equipment and the floor space. Number of components 0402 placed in a case 4.33" x1.42"x0.47" would require 15 of 7" diameter reeels 8mm tape. This means that the bulk feeders need not just smaller storage space, but what is more important, that the operator has 15 times less to stop the machine for replenishment of the components. Also has to be considered that the replenishment of the components in bulk feeder takes much less time then in tape feeder. Because the storage cases in bulk feeding can be reusable, it significantly reduces the wste and has no negative effect on the environment. Modern Technology World Inc.(MTW) came with a new concept of electronic bulk feeder for all models pick and place machines built by Quad Systems Corporation.
