Why Cleaning is required for No-Clean Paste | 26 September, 1998

Can sombody tell, why the boards soldered with no-clean paste be cleaned at all ! I wants to sop cleaning at our plant but technicaljustification is required to convince my customers in Australia & England. Pl. let me know, from where I can find the required literature. Thnks, Ajit

Ajit, How clean is clean? Are you running fine-line, fine-pitch; COB, BGA, Flip-Chip; making high rel circuits and putting them into a hostile environment? Well, as I have just posted to an earlier similar question on the SMTNet, there is no such thing as no residue flux. At least with paste, you have greater control over the quantity of flux being deposited but, do you have any hand or wave soldered components? Take a look at J-STD-001B and Appendix D. Maybe that will help you define your process. Remember, even if you are successful in your justification of not cleaning your final product, there will always be a need for cleaning. Screens, stencils, misprinted PCBs, wave solder pallets, squeegees, tooling, etc. New cleaning applications can develop. Example: Pallets that normally would get cleaned concomitantly with the PCBs, now just accumulate flux residue because the PCB cleaning operation has gone away. You will need a good stencil cleaning process that can handle these cleaning applications.
