1 Design verification. LR Environmental (213.770.0634) sells used environmental stress equipment. Installing a shake table is no small decision, depending on the sophistication of the equipment, you may need reinforced floors, a special room, etc. As an alternative, you might consider using a service such as MB Dynamics (800.254.2272) to run your characterization tests. 2 Product reliability testing. Certainly you wouldn't shake your product to be shipped to customers, but running reliabilty tests, including shake and burn-in testing, are a good way to maintain the relaility of your product. We modified paint shakers, yea like they use at Home Depot, to shake the bejangers out of boards.

Most commercial vib testers are programmable over a wide range of frequencies, which makes them expensive to purchase and set-up. We knew the frequency we wanted to shake the boards at, based on our engineering acceptance testing. So we rewired the paint shakes to work at that frequency. And guess what, paint shakers cost less than a commercial vib tester.

Just a brief comment. Military hardware that was produced by my former employer, indeed was subject to shaking for reliability purposes. Each assembly underwent low level random vibration for a brief period (5 or 10 minutes as I recall) to uncover workmanship problems. The quality assurance and production staff found this to be effective screening to detect latent failures. I agree that this would not make sense for any application that was not high reliability. I believe that it might be an asset to some commercial applications, such as aircraft and medical electronics.
