QUAD / MYDATA / CONTACT SYSTEMS

Does anyone have info on any of these systems (good or bad). We are looking at these 3 types for a new SMT pnp machine. We are low volume high mix.

Put in a IVc about a year ago. We are low to medium vol, high mix and have found the results acceptable. The actual placement rate is normally about 1800 / hr. We have placed BGAs, fine pitch (.012) to 0402 without trouble. The machine has only occationally been down, nothing major.

Mydata and Contact Systems make good machines, but the QSV from Quad has more feeders space, a better smart feeder systems and works much better as an in-line system. Although Mydata and Contact can put their machines in-line, the cost is substantial and it is very inefficient. Unlike the other two, Quad software is all inclusive and a single package. I had some experience with the Contact machine, but we had to buy a Unicam package and have all of our people trained on Unicam. Finally, I really like the fact that Quad has individul smart feeders. If I need to buy another feeder, I just buy another feeder. I do not have to buy a new magazine or mess with adjustments on adjustable magazines.

We started with a IVc machine which worked well. We are very happy with our upgrade to a QSV.

I've built complete boards without the benefit of ONE feeder - 100% of all parts on trays; don't have another feeder, put the 20 parts on a tray - no need to spend another $850 or $1700 or $3400... Mydata feeders needs only 1" leader/trailer, Quad needs 12"+. I've put new boards on the Mydata in less than 4 hours. I've put down uBGAs and 0402s with no problems (as can be expected with 0402s...). I've gotten my Mydata to run as fast as 4200pph but typically cruise around 1500-2000 depending on QFPs; not bad for a machine rated at 4800pph. I have it configured in a batch mode, why buy conveyors to move 10-25 boards, but I've loaded the Mydata to build both sides of the board at the same time; no need to build 100 on one side then do 100 on the other side. If you're doing low volume, high mix the Mydata is the way to go.

I depends on 1) are you a contract manufacturer or OEM (for programing purposes), 2)what do you really consider low volume, 3) what is your component range - and what is the finest pitch you place, any uBGA (CSP) or flip chip, 4) Do you need full ball recognition for BGA's, 5) etc... I am very familiar with the various products offered by all three manufacturers. I have come to the conclusion that every product has its own strengths and weaknesses. The bottom line is customer satisfaction. In my experience, Quad rates the highest in this respect. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have regarding your equipment selection. We bought a new machine this year, and like you, narrowed the field of 7 or 8 down to Quad, Mydata, & Contact Systems. As mentioned previously, these are all good machines, and each one has its advantages/nifty features. It can be a very difficult decision to make. The best advice I can give is to get behind the wheel and drive each of them. Take an operator or PE with you and write a program for one of your boards, load some feeders, place some parts. Have your own agenda for what you want to see. The advantages/nifty features that are important to YOU will be more obvious and you will be able to make the decision that's best for your business.
