Cookies ala mode | 10 December, 1998

Maybe.

But I dont think so. Cookies are essential for SMTnet's future plans as a dynamic web site with personalization. You can browse the site, and we will allow "non-cookie" users the same functionality as regular users, but you will have less of an experience if you "prompt before accepting cookies". (as you have probably discovered)

Dynamic websites are becomming more common and browsing the web without cookie use is not practical.

I explained the pros and cons of our cookie use and general cookie use in the link below. But in a nutshell, cookies are safe.

I can only really suggest one thing, in order to make browsing the web enjoyable for you: Accept all cookies. Or you can reject all cookies. To do this you need to go into the options or preferences of your browser. But I personally would not choose to browse the web in "prompt before accepting cookies".

Each page on this site read or writes up to 3 cookies, and since this page is in a frameset, it has a total of 3 pages which is 9 cookie transactions. I may increase cookie use as needed in the future, but I will always use the minimum amount cookies needed.

If you need any more information about what we are doing or any conscernes, let me know.

| While trying to access this web site you sent over 10 "cookies" A bit overdone, isn't it? | Ed, lighten up, it's the holidays! Pack up the cookies and hand them out to your friends and loved ones.Eat all you can cause around here there are plenty to chew on. On a more real note! The smtnet cookies are quite harmless and take very little space but have a big impact on the service they provide. take for instance the one that monitors the threads you have just read? Isn't it nice that the ones you have looked at still show up as read the next day? I really don't think these guys use it as marketing info to sell to large mailing groups, RIGHT GUYS? The problem I have is trying to keep the good cookies and get rid of all those ones like excite! So look at it from the bright side, some of these babies really are good for your pc diet. I am just making light of it all so please don't be offended! These guys know that the users of this site are a very picky bunch and would go out of there way not to piss them off. Cookies aren't always bad, It's just people have been abused by there misuse and I don't think that is happening here! Have a good lunch break and don't lose your cookies!!!!!

Right!

We will not give out any submitted information about you, without your prior consent. And the information that you release will go under your "user profile" page (kinda like a business card). Cookies, along with your registration data in the near future, will allow you to personalize your experience at SMTnet.

We are not interested in selling lists of individual user information. What we will do, is use the demographic information so that we can sell more banner ads, (i.e. there are 500 users who are interested in inspection equipment).

When we start "User Registration", we will draft a privacy/security statement that will be much more specific.

Right now, we have very little information about you, other than what is already public (via forum postings), and trivial information that every server in the Internet logs (i.e. IP address, referring page, browser, etc.).
