Placing 0402 components

Placing 0402 components | 23 December, 1998

I am trying to place 0402 components using a Fuji CP2. Does anyone have experience doing this? Are there any tricks to this that I need to know about? Thanks

Does Fuji have adaptive pick? | 23 December, 1998

Many machines now have adaptive pick that helps tune in the pickup as the 0402 part moves around in the pocket. Fuji may have a feature like this, but I think they adapt the pickup in only one axis (by adjusting the feeder rack). Unfortunately this is not the critical axis. High speed gantry machines adapt in both X and Y for pickups. If you find out anything more about Fuji's capabilities for adapting the pickup locations based on feedback from there vision system, I would be curious to find out more. Good Luck.

Good Luck. | Fuji CP4.3's use pickup offset correction. I believe the sample period is every five picks per feeder before an adjustment is made. This is to allow for a natural sample period and pervent unnatural and excessive feeder position offset on the Device tables. Yes, you are correct, the offset correction is in the X axis only. There is generally 10 to 30 percent "pocket slop" associated with all tape components. 0402's are nothing special especially for a cp4.3 (I don't know about the CP2). Rather than compute Y axis corrections for pickup (impossible for a CP machine) Fuji decided to have accurate indexing systems on their feeders. Walla! a simple maechanical solution which requires no computational power and performs well. In fact my evaluation demonstrated no greater attrition loss on 0402's vs 1206's. (300 DPM picks) Fuji has demonstrated time and time again that simplicity is the hallmark to reliability. Plus they perform!!! Unfortunately I don't have the same enthuesasism for Quads (we have a host of IVc's). Sorry. Enjoy. Phillip Hunter Engineering Technician, Laughlin-Wilt Group Inc.

Phil - The C Series machines do not support adaptive pick. If you get a chance, take a look at the the Q Series product line from Quad. I think that you will be impressed. I worked with L&W for a number of years. There has been a great relationship between our two companies. It may be time to consider upgrading some of your older C Series machines to Q Series products. The good news is that all of your 1200 tape feeders work on the new products. Give me a call some time at 732-728-0951 and please say hello to Joe and Jay. Merry Christmas to all at L&W!

I was certently impressed with the capabilities! Especially the CSP lighting options. In my 4 years with LWG I have never seen so much tollerence directed at down time due to electrical / mechanical failure. than with our Quads. Since the introduction of our 3 Fuji's , reliability has taken on a new meaning.

I have worked with Fuji and Panasonic for many years. Before that time, I worked with Quad. Who hasn't that's my age? I can only applaud the former. No further comment on the latter required. Most people hear and know it all as the same old rhetoric.

Recently, I was introduced to Philips. Outstanding! No down time and almost bullet proof while being easy to program and operate. Excellent everything especially "Emerald and Sapphire" With even the later versions (Constellation Series) of Orion and Eclipse behave as the Gem series. Though the names and colors don't improve my appetite, nothing more need be said except life is good when processes are manageable.

Re:X Y Correction at High Speed at +/- .002 | 28 December, 1998

Inorder to pick up 0402's RELIABLY correction is required in X & Y axis. Their are Chip Shooter that do this, (KME Create, and Sanyo) You can also place at +/- .002" at 43K cph with a Chip Shooter Bulk feeding is also desirable. It is not only the XY correction it involves the engage of the Theta mechanics and the transfer of energy to the tool tip. Turret machines are more durable than the modular systems. How many 8 year old quad, philips, or siemens do you see running in multi shift operations? Not many, they burn out. If your volumes are low and resale is not an issue the modulars might be an answer.
