Windows NT GUI vs. A web browser interface

Windows NT graphic user interfaces for equipment abound. Companies seem to have standardized on Windows NT for every thing from reflow ovens to pick and place systems. But why? How badly would someone be "bucking the trend" if they manufactured a piece of assembly equipment that was front-ended by a graphical web page? The familiar environment of the web makes the GUI just as friendly and HTML is trully a world wide language. So what do you think? Would having a platform controled by HTML defeat any plans underway in this industry I'm not aware of?
