Attenna assembly for RF board | 29 January, 1999

I have a recent design (1 component side only) that calls for 2 surface mounted antenna's (brass plated) to be mounted on a PCB. The problem arises when the PCB is 18x11.25 and has 15 to 20 PCB's in the pallet (IE weight, fixturing to hold the antenna's parallel to the PCB). The other issue is reflow oven clearance (we had planned on running these antenna's through the SMT line, its dimensions are 1.75" tall, 1.245" dia, .020" wall thickness and 1.75" tall x .460" dia, .020" wall thickness). �We have a Heller 1800W (nitrogen ready)with only aprox. 1.5" of total clearance. I need sugguestions from anyone who might be doing something similar, or know of equipment, or techniques. Thanks

Are you running this on the mesh or the edge hold chain?

I have 6 Heller 1700 series and the tunnel height (from the mesh) is over 2.25 inches. Dean

Thanks | Is that 1.5" of clearance from the top of the rails to the top of the tunnel or from the top of the belt to the top of the tunnel? If it's from top of rails, you can have any number of fixture houses make you up something that will allow the product to still sit on the rails, but at a lower position. Like a "U" type carrier where the product sits in the bottom of the "U". You could also just run the product on the belt. I'm probably way off base but just figured I'd try to help.

We only have 1.5" (max) from the edge guides to the top of the heated tunnel. The CBS eliminated the mesh belt in the Heller design. A pallet design to recess the board is one approach, but I am concerned that since the panel has 15 boards within the array that position of components will be difficult to say the least. The shear fact that there are no supporting leads to hold up the two antenna's will require a hold down fixture, which means more of a height issue. I believe that a secondary operation is the only solution, even if it is for the short term.
