Low-temperature, lead-free solders | 19 April, 1999

Do solders exist that are both lead-free and low-temperature (e.g. 100-170 Celsius range)? If so, who supplies these materials? Any websites or contact information would be most helpful.

Also, I am not an expert on soldering, so any good websites on soldering alloys and process options would be most helpful.

Thanks!

Joseph,

I've heard of a lead free solder alloy, Sn43/Bi57 that melts at 139C and reflows between 160-170C. You may find the following website useful.

| Joseph: Most sodder companies have tables of characteristic on their products. An example is: | ******* This alloy is nearly the same as the much more common58Bi42Sn ((eutectic at 138C). The shortcoming (depending on your requirements) of this alloy is its brittleness, it has a high tensile strength but low shear strength. In paste form I recommend fluxes with low activation temperatures and good SIR readings low temperatures. WARNING!!! When used with Sn/Pb plated components, or if Pb is introduced in any way, a PbSnBi ternary eutectic can form reducing the resultant solder joint melting temperature to below 100C
